Horaisan consists of rhyolite (granodiorite) made of magma. It is said that Xu Fu's(徐福) party, who was ordered by Qin Shi Huang(始皇帝), landed on Horaisan. Since ancient times, it has been respected as a sacred mountain where God descends. It is an ancient ritual site facing the Kumano River, and there is Asuka Shrine at the southern foot of the mountain.

The oldest Ryujin accretionary prism is distributed in Nanki Kumano Geopark. The hydrothermal alteration associated with magma activity hardened the rocks of the Ryujin accretionary prism, which became one of the factors that formed the canyon. This is where the borders of Wakayama, Nara, and Mie prefectures meet. A jet ship is sailing between Shiko and Torokyo.

It has been called Muro's hot spring since the Asuka period, and it is one of the three oldest hot springs in Japan, and it is a hot spring resort that has a record in the Japanese Shoki. Located on the northern extension of the dead tree Nada arc-shaped dike, it is a high-temperature hot spring that springs from the upper layer of the Tanabe Group and contains sodium hydrogen carbonate as the main component. Most of the source wells are originally self-fountains and are concentrated in the Yuzaki area.

The Phoenix Fold Those folded rocks consist of sandstones or mudstones. As you know, they are formed by sands and muds that flowed form a river mouth to deep sea ground and piled up with taking long-long times to be firm, and finally become rocks. Those rocks are called sedimentary rocks and they are normally flat unless they are having something strong pressure. This Phoenix Fold shows us unusual shape. Why? Because they had enormous pressure by submarine volcanic activity and crustal activity, before they have been firm in the deep sea and they forced to bend like present shapes. It is said that a incident occured about 30 million years ago. This bed has gradually lifted up by the tectonic movement and come up to the surface. This site is very famous for us to observe beautiful shape of the fold. Please imagine how the earth has made dynamic activity, seeing this Phoenix Fold.

Hello, welcome to our Nanki-Kumano Geopark.
My name is Jimbo Keishi. I am very glad to have a chance to guide you today.
Please call me Keishi.
Today, we are going to visit one of would-famous geosite Phenix Fold by boat.
Before starting our tour, I would like to explain key points because engine noise would disturb
my words.
Phenix Fold has such curious figure as this photo shows. Foe what made such a figure?
As you know, the earth surface covered 10 or more plates. At the point of about 80km off the
coast, two plates, one is continental plate, and the other is sea plate, conflicts under deep
seabed.
Please look this figure and animation. At the result of very longstanding conflict, the sand and
mud deposit on the deep seabed had been run upon continent and folded. That is the reason
why Phenix Fold was made.
The name Phenix is come from near place.
Well, let's start our tour. Thank you.
Mushikui-Iwa Rock

Look! What a fantastic honeycomb rock ! People call this “worm-eaten rock”. What made such a fantastic shape ? Bees or monsters?
This rock is a kind of igneous rock, and a part of long wall of huge caldera (Kumano-caldera) that appeared about 14 million years ago.
This wall is said to be the largest rock dike in the world. It is said the volcanic ash from Kumano- caldera would lower world temperature about 10 degrees centigurade.
We will visit the famous rock Ichimai-Iwa Monolith later. It located at the west end of the dike.
Please look up this rock, you would find something like a hut. That is not a hut for human residence but for buddha statues.
They were made by a visiting yamabushi(ascetic trainer) praying for people's happiness about 200 years ago. Now, the buddha statues were moved on the ground, so we can see them.
Sliding down. Land made from deep sea. Made from Shallow sea
Because of the shifting of the continental and oceanic plates, various sand and sediments were pushed together, forming one of the three land masses that make up the Kii peninsula. This is called an Accretionary Prism.
Water falls in the mountains and is absorbed into the ground. The rainwater wells up from the ground, and snakes down the mountain, forming new rivers. These rivers carry sediments, which accumulate to form deltas.
It is a hot spring resort that was discovered in the middle of the Edo period when Shirasagi healed a wound on his leg. Like Shirahama hot springs, it is located on the northern extension of Karekinada arc-shaped dike and springs from the upper layer of the Tanabe Group.

The upper layers of the Tanabe Group deposited in the forearc basin are distributed. In Mikusazaki, you can observe the sedimentary structures peculiar to the strata deposited in the shallow sea, such as cross-bedding and ripple marks. In addition, fossils such as shellfish, whales, and crabs have been discovered. On the opposite bank of the harbor, you can also observe the mud diapir, which once had mud rising hundreds of meters in the stratum.

The exquisite striped pattern of the alternating layers of sandstone and mudstone in the upper part of the Tanabe Group deposited in the forearc basin is impressive. Sedimentary structures formed by transporting sand, etc. mainly due to tidal currents and waves develop, and the characteristics of strata deposited in shallow water can be observed. You can also see trace fossils.

In Gongenzaki, mudstone dikes with muddy lower layers intruding into the upper layers of the Tanabe Group develop. At the time of the formation of the Tanabe Group, mud deep underground was liquefied in the wake of an earthquake, and it is thought to be a dike extending from the mud diapir that cut into the upper strata. It is a valuable place where you can observe mudstone dikes three-dimensionally from the wave-cut platform to the sea cliff.

You can see the uncorfomity between the Otonashi River prism and the Kumano Group. The Kumano Group is a stratum deposited in the forearc basin formed on the Otonashi River accretionary prism, and there is a time gap of more than 30 million years between them. The Otonashi River accretionary prism is a muddy alternating layer, and the Kumano Group is a conglomerate / sandstone layer. There is an outcrop along the forest road connecting the villages of Sasabi and Kuju.

The geological boundary of rhyolite (granodiorite) formed from the Kumano Group and the magma that penetrates it is exposed. It is a sheet-shaped igneous rock vein formed by magma penetrating at a low angle. Columnar joints develop on the rock wall of the Kumano River (Mt. Yotsume) due to the contraction of magma during cooling, forming a characteristic landscape in the Kumano River canyon. It is the southernmost body of Omine granitic rocks distributed along the Omine Mountains.

It is a shrine without a shrine building where Shiko valley joins the Kumano River. It enshrines the giant rocks on the hillside formed by the collapse of the thick sandstone layer in the upper part of the Kumano Group deposited in the forearc basin. Since the coal seam of the Kumano coalfield is displaced, it is estimated that a fault will pass in the east-west direction around this area, and it is possible that a collapse occurred along this fault.

It is a coal layer with a thickness of about 20 cm sandwiched between the upper layers of the Kumano Group. Coal has a metallic luster and is easily distinguishable from other formations. This coal layer is a coal layer that was mined by the nearby Mikuma Coal Mine, but the area between them is cut by a fault. Seven coal mines in the Kumano coalfield were operating in this area.
