This island is a small island (official name is Takashima) that floats in Rinkaiura, 130m north-south, 35m east-west, and 25m high. The entire island is made of relatively new conglomerate that continues from Banshozaki on the north side, and the sea cave gate is open in the center. The evening view where the setting sun overlaps the sea cave gate has a taste.

Engetsuto (meaning ‘round-moon island’) is just off the coast of Shi-rahama. The island has a 9-metre-wide hole, through which the setting sun aligns perfectly during the spring and autumn equinoxes.
It was once part of a chain of islands, but continued erosion has left only the islet we see today.

(The rock needs to be hard enough to make such a hole, but the magma activity that occurred about 14 million years ago is said to be the heat source.)
In the summer, a kind of goby, Sicyopterus japonicus, can be seen climbing this waterfall in search of food. This is because the suckers are well developed. (Show the image of ボウズハゼ)

The rhyolite pyroclastic rocks of the "Ichimai-iwa arcuate dike" are weathered to form insect-eating tafoni. It is thought that the cause of weathering is the process of water evaporation from the surface, and the rock surface is peeled off and formed by the growth of microcrystals such as gypsum. The Phoenix Fold Those folded rocks consist of sandstones or mudstones. As you know, they are formed by sands and muds that flowed form a river mouth to deep sea ground and piled up with taking long-long times to be firm, and finally become rocks. Those rocks are called sedimentary rocks and they are normally flat unless they are having something strong pressure. This Phoenix Fold shows us unusual shape. Why? Because they had enormous pressure by submarine volcanic activity and crustal activity, before they have been firm in the deep sea and they forced to bend like present shapes. It is said that a incident occured about 30 million years ago. This bed has gradually lifted up by the tectonic movement and come up to the surface. This site is very famous for us to observe beautiful shape of the fold. Please imagine how the earth has made dynamic activity, seeing this Phoenix Fold.

My name is Jimbo Keishi. I am very glad to have a chance to guide you today.

Today, we are going to visit one of would-famous geosite Phenix Fold by boat.
Before starting our tour, I would like to explain key points because engine noise would disturb

Phenix Fold has such curious figure as this photo shows. Foe what made such a figure?
As you know, the earth surface covered 10 or more plates. At the point of about 80km off the
coast, two plates, one is continental plate, and the other is sea plate, conflicts under deep

Please look this figure and animation. At the result of very longstanding conflict, the sand and
mud deposit on the deep seabed had been run upon continent and folded. That is the reason
why Phenix Fold was made.
The name Phenix is come from near place.
Well, let's start our tour. Thank you.

Mushikui-Iwa Rock

<English>
Look! What a fantastic honeycomb rock ! People call this “worm-eaten rock”. What made such a fantastic shape ? Bees or monsters?
This rock is a kind of igneous rock, and a part of long wall of huge caldera (Kumano-caldera) that appeared about 14 million years ago.
This wall is said to be the largest rock dike in the world. It is said the volcanic ash from Kumano- caldera would lower world temperature about 10 degrees centigurade.
We will visit the famous rock Ichimai-Iwa Monolith later. It located at the west end of the dike.
Please look up this rock, you would find something like a hut. That is not a hut for human residence but for buddha statues.
They were made by a visiting yamabushi(ascetic trainer) praying for people's happiness about 200 years ago. Now, the buddha statues were moved on the ground, so we can see them.

Sliding down. Land made from deep sea. Made from Shallow sea

Because of the shifting of the continental and oceanic plates, various sand and sediments were pushed together, forming one of the three land masses that make up the Kii peninsula. This is called an Accretionary Prism.

Water falls in the mountains and is absorbed into the ground. The rainwater wells up from the ground, and snakes down the mountain, forming new rivers. These rivers carry sediments, which accumulate to form deltas.
