小口から田辺市本宮町請川までを結ぶ熊野参詣道です。新宮市域では熊野層群の泥岩の卓越するゾーンを通るところが多く、マグマからできた流紋岩(花崗斑岩)を越える大雲取越に比べて緩やかな古道が続きます。
