熊野層群上部層に挟まれる厚さ20cm前後の石炭層です。石炭は金属光沢を放つので、他の地層と容易に識別できます。この石炭層は、近くにあった三熊炭鉱が採炭していた石炭層ですが、その間は断層で切られています。この地域には熊野炭田の炭鉱が７ｶ所稼業していました。
