砂岩と泥岩が交互に積み重なった砂岩泥岩互層は海溝の扇状地に堆積した地層でタービダイトと呼ばれます。地層の下面には砂や泥を運んだ乱流（混濁流）の向きを示す痕跡（ソールマーク）が見られます。和深の海岸は、紀伊半島の土台をなす牟婁付加体の地層観察に絶好の地点です。
