田子浦の波食棚上には、あたかも”さらし首”を並べたように巨礫が泥岩中に散在しているので、この巨礫を含む泥岩層は「サラシ首層」と呼ばれています。大陸斜面にある牟婁付加体が断層沿いに崩壊して、海底土石流として大陸斜面上を流れて底に堆積したものと考えられています。近年は、泥ダイアピル岩体あるいは泥火山の噴出堆積物とする考え方が提案され論争になっています。
