堆積した時代が大きく異なる地層群の関係を不整合と呼びます。ここでは紀伊半島の土台をなす牟婁付加体と、その上に堆積した前弧海盆堆積体の熊野層群の不整合関係が観察できます。牟婁付加体が5000万〜2000万年前に海溝に堆積し、プレート沈み込み運動で陸のプレートに付加し持ち上げられ、その上に形成された前弧海盆に熊野層群が1800万〜1500万年前に堆積し始めるまでの数百万年間のプレート運動がこの不整合に示されています。
