北山峡の筏流しの難所のひとつで、神護の字が当てられています。竜神付加体の砂岩泥岩互層が北に向かって傾斜し、地層の傾きにほぼ平行な断層があるほか、U字形の褶曲もみられます。岩石は熱水変質を受けて硬化・白色化しています。河道の開削工事完成を記念する碑文が河床の岩に彫られています。
