熊野層群の砂岩層が作る絶壁が熊野灘に向かって突き出した岬です。背後には梶取崎と同様に海岸段丘が広がっています。日本で最初の「鯨油を使った行灯式灯台」がありました。遣唐副使だった吉備真備が漂流した地とも伝わっています。古式捕鯨の船団を指揮した「山見」のひとつです。
