Nachikatsuura Town / Map 66: Shimosato Waterway Observatory
海上保安庁の施設で、1953年に設置されました。1982年から人工衛星とレーザー測距装置による測地を行っている日本唯一の水路観測所です。正確な海図を作成するための施設です。下里水路観測所の測地観測により、日本で作られる海図は世界測地系に結びつけられ、その海図を利用する船舶の航行の安全に寄与しています。
