５世紀末、清寧天皇の熊野行幸の際に発見されたと伝わります。また弘法大師が温泉の薬効を喜び薬師堂を建て瑠璃光山湯泉寺と名付けたとも伝わります。古座川弧状岩脈の北東延長部にあたると考えられ、熊野層群の堆積岩にできた割れ目を通って湧出しています。
