前弧海盆に堆積した田辺層群上部層の厚い砂岩層がつくる高さ50mほどの海食崖です。その下部には海食洞が形成されています。枯木灘弧状岩脈の北部延長に位置し、周辺に鉱山跡がいくつか存在します。洞窟内の砂岩層から鉱床成分がしみ出し、茶褐色に変色している部分があります。熊野水軍の伝説が残っています。
