波の侵食でできた平らな海底（波食台）が隆起して海岸段丘となった地形です。陸側の駐車場下に段丘礫層が見られます。田辺層群上部層の砂岩層では、浅海でできた地層特有の堆積構造や生痕化石が観察できます。千畳敷近くの海食洞は、ユビナガコウモリの近畿地方唯一の繁殖洞となっています。
