飛鳥時代から牟婁の温湯とよばれ、日本書紀にも記録が残る温泉地で日本三古湯の一つです。枯木灘弧状岩脈の北部延長上に位置し、田辺層群上部層から湧出し、炭酸水素ナトリウムを主要成分とする高温泉です。源泉井の大部分は元来自噴泉で湯崎地区に集中しています。
