新宮藩主水野氏の居城跡です。マグマからできた流紋岩の山上に築城されています。城の石垣にも流紋岩(花崗斑岩)が用いられているほか、大手門付近は流紋岩(花崗斑岩)の節理を活かして防御しやすく進入路が築かれています。熊野川に面し、川と海の交通の要衝に建てられ、川沿いには炭納屋跡があります。
