Over about 850 m, rock towers (bridge piles) like piers with a width of about 15 m are lined up in a straight line. It is a rhyolite (quartz porphyry) dike in which magma that rose from underground about 14 million years ago invaded the Kumano Group. The gravel scattered on the wave-cut platform after the dike collapsed is said to have been carried by the tsunami caused by the great earthquake. (Note: Hashiguiiwa is also included in the 100 Geological Sites of Japan, "Koza River Arc-shaped Rocks".) The folk tales of Kobo Daishi and the evil spirits of the heavens, and the folk tales of honest people and Umibozu are left. It is also a breeding ground for Styan's Grasshopper Warbler(Locustella pleskei), an internationally rare bird.
