滝の拝の河床を形成する熊野層群の地層は熱水変質をうけて白色硬化しています。均質に硬い岩石を豊富な水流が穿ち、さまざまな形と大きさのポットホール（甌穴）や水路状の瀞が形成されました。滝の拝太郎の龍宮民話（何通りかのストーリーがある）が残っています。７月には滝の岩壁を無数のボウズハゼやヨシノボリがよじ登ります。
